First Time Getting a Skin Booster Treatment? Here’s Everything You Need To Know…

First time getting a skin booster treatment, or wanting to learn more about injectable skincare? Here’s everything you need to know, from the different products available on the market to pre-treatment and aftercare advice.

What is a Skin Booster Treatment?

As the name suggests, a skin booster is an injectable treatment that aims to improve the overall appearance and quality of the skin. These treatments offer a multitude of benefits, from hydration and radiance, to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike dermal fillers, skin boosters do not add extra volume to the face, although the complexion may appear smoother and firmer as a result of adding deep hydration below the skin’s surface.

What are the Benefits?

Skin boosters are primarily formulated to deliver deep and long-lasting hydration, however there are a host of other benefits and these vary between brands. Let’s take a look at some of the skin concerns that these injectables can target.

  • Skin Laxity
  • Dryness
  • Roughness or uneven texture
  • Fine lines
  • Dullness
  • Dark circles

Alongside these skin concerns, many boosters work to bio-stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, helping to improve firmness and overall skin quality over time.

Which Skin Booster is Right For Me?

Your aesthetic practitioner will be able to help you decide which skincare injectable would offer the best results for your individual needs. Skin boosters with a high molecular weight such as Seventy Hyal 2000 will provide the most immediate hydration and glow, while other treatments such as Profhilo work at a deeper level to reduce the visible signs of ageing.

Different skin booster brands are also targeted to different age ranges. Seventy Hyal 2000 is suitable for clients of all skin types, aged 18+, whereas Profhilo is recommended for clients who are 30+. Other skin boosters such as Sunkeos 200 are intended to soften the signs of ageing, working to combat laxity, sun damage and wrinkles.

Products will also vary in formula. Some may contain pure hyaluronic acid as their hero ingredient, to hydrate and boost radiance, whereas others may employ other ingredients such as peptides, amino acids or polynucleotides.

How to Prepare for a Skin Booster Treatment?

When preparing for your skin booster treatment, consultations are key. You should be open and honest with your practitioner about your current skincare routine, skin type and concerns to ensure that you are receiving the best treatment for your needs. Prior to treatment you should avoid alcohol for 24 hours to avoid increasing the risk of bleeding, as alcohol thins the blood. You should also avoid using skincare actives for two days prior to your appointment, these include retinols and AHA/BHA acids. Check out our blog on skincare actives.

Can Skin Boosters be Used with Other Treatments?

In short, yes! Skin booster treatments can be combined with dermal filler treatments or anti-ageing injections in the same treatment plan. Best practice is to wait two weeks between treatments, to allow the skin to heal and the filler or skin booster to settle. However, multiple treatments can be performed in the same session if different areas are being injected. For example, if Seventy Hyal 2000 is used for facial enhancements across the cheek and you are having a non-surgical rhinoplasty or lip filler with a dermal filler such as REVOLAX. Your practitioner will be able to advise you on treatment packages and the timeline for combining different procedures to ensure safety and efficacy.

Skin Booster Aftercare Advice

Post-treatment you may see visible ‘blebs’ or raised bumps at the injection sites. Other typical side effects include swelling, minor bruising and itchiness as the skin heals. These symptoms are normal and should subside within 24 hours.

However, your skin needs time to heal for optimal results. You should avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment (hello rest day…) and you should continue to avoid skincare actives like vitamin C, retinol and AHA/BHAs for 24 hours. It is also best to avoid oil-based makeup, so if you can go bare-faced, you should do so whilst the skin heals. It’s important to note that you should avoid treatments such as facials, facial waxing, chemical peels, IPL, laser or microdermabrasion for two weeks after treatment. If you are going to a different practitioner for any of the above, it’s important to let them know that you have recently undergone a skin booster treatment, as your complexion is likely to be more sensitive.

When will I See Results and How Long will They Last For?

Skin boosters typically require 2-3 treatments, spaced at four week intervals. After your first treatment with Seventy Hyal, you should see an immediate improvement in hydration and glow. Once the full treatment course has been completed, the results will typically last for 6-12 months, after which, you can book in for a top up treatment to keep the glow going.
